Effective parenting in stepfamilies: Empirical evidence of what works

Objective The purpose of this study was to examine research evidence about effective childrearing in stepfamilies (i.e., parenting practices that contribute children's physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being). Background Stepfamilies are increasingly common. Studies show children tend be at higher risk for negative outcomes than first-married biological-parent families. As on has expanded, researchers have made strides identifying promote positive stepfamilies. Method We reviewed 37 studies contained empirical by biological or adoptive parents Results Researchers identified numerous actions employed linked outcomes. Effective fall broadly into five domains: (a) maintaining close parent–child bonds, (b) establishing appropriate communication boundaries, (c) exercising parental control, (d) supporting stepparent–stepchild relationship development, (e) facilitating stepfamily cohesion. Conclusions involves carefully managing competing family needs, such as the need balance shared time with one-on-one establish open boundaries some areas but closed others. Implications Parents available them a number empirically supported action items child well-being
